Widow Gives Generous Donation to Med School

Thanks to a generous $1 billion donation by Dr Ruth Gottesman, students at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, New York, will no longer need to pay tuition.

The 93-year-old widow of a former Wall Street investor, David Gottesman, made the announcement in front of a crowd of overjoyed students and faculty members on Monday, 26 February.

“I’m happy to share with you that starting in August this year, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine will be tuition-free,” Ruth told the packed auditorium.

In an interview with an international publication, Ruth revealed that she inherited the money in September 2022 along with the instructions: “do whatever you think is right with it”.

For the former professor – who used to work at the Bronx medical school and is currently the chairperson of the college’s board of trustees – the answer was simple. It would go to the school where tuition is nearly $59 000 each year, leaving students with substantial debt.

“I am very thankful to my late husband, Sandy, for leaving these funds in my care, and I feel blessed to be given the great privilege of making this gift to such a worthy cause,” she added.
