Children’s Hospital Breaks Ground on New Orthopaedic Unit

The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, Western Cape is working on a new orthopaedic unit worth R110 million which could greatly improve the healthcare they give to their patients.

Ground was broken at the new construction site on Wednesday, 17 April, as surgeons and doctors alike gathered to help welcome the new facility.

“The Orthopaedic Unit will serve as a cornerstone of specialised care, offering multidisciplinary services under one roof,” said the spokesperson for the Children’s Hospital Trust, Zodidi Dano.

“Not only will the Orthopaedic Unit elevate the standard of care, but it will also serve as a hub for education and training, nurturing the next generation of medical professionals,” she added.

The new unit will be massively beneficial for both the patients and staff at the hospital, as experts believe it will greatly increase their healthcare capacity. Projections have estimated that the facility will conduct 1 000 surgeries annually, and provide care for more than 5 500 outpatients, including over 1 400 clubfoot patients.

According to Dano, funds for the new unit were raised by tireless efforts of fundraising for three decades. Local firefighters also contributed to the effort, going so far as to donate R45 000 on 4 April.
