The president of La Ligue de l’Estuaire in Gabon, Serge Mombo, has been arrested for alleged sexual abuse of young players as a condition for placing them in national teams.

The former policeman and national team kit caretaker was re-elected as Gabon’s senior football league president in June 2021.

However, shortly after the election, the accusations surfaced, which Mombo denied saying people are trying to tarnish his image.

Despite his denials, FIFA commenced investigations and authorities in Gabon began monitoring him during the AFCON tournament.

Mombo returned back home with the national team on Tuesday, 26 January, after they were eliminated from the tournament by Burkina Faso, and was immediately detained at the airport.
