The skies on the eastern outskirts of Stockholm, Sweden, will soon be buzzing, but in the most curious and helpful way, thanks to a collaboration between three companies.

The municipality of Varmdo is on track to see drones delivering milk, thanks to a project – named “Foodora Air” – involving telecommunications company Tele2, grocery delivery firm foodora, and drone delivery service, Aerit.

Starting in May, Foodora Air intends to service the area’s 10 000 citizens utilising Aerit’s fleet of Nimbi drones; all they need to do is use the foodora app to place their order, and soon a little multi-copter will bring milk to their doorstep, garden or property.

Each drone has six propeller units and contains Tele2’s 5G technology, allowing seamless communications with a remote human operator. Once at the delivery point, the package is lowered with a cable, keeping the customer safe from drone noise and rotator blades.

With a maximum load of four kilograms and a cargo compartment allowing 10 litres, the future potential for the flying robots to carry food, medicine and other retail items, is something the project partners are keeping firmly in mind.

For now, cows won’t be jumping over the moon, but flying milk is a certainty.
