Cavani Challenges Messi to Fight During Friendly Clash

Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani has confirmed that he was involved in a heated argument that almost came to blows with Lionel Messi during Uruguay’s friendly draw against Argentina on Monday, 18 November, in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The confrontation was the result of a heavy foul on Messi from combative midfielder Matias Vecino, to which he reacted angrily, which sparked an argument between him and Cavani.

According to reports, Cavani asked Messi: “Do you want to fight?” to which the Barcelona star responded and said: “Whenever you want, whenever you want.”

The pair were eventually separated by several players, including Luis Suarez and Diego Godin.

During the post-match interview, Cavani confirmed that he indeed offered Messi a fight and that it is part of the game.

He said: “Yes, that’s football. That’s what the Clasico matches [between Argentina and Uruguay] are like. That’s football.”

Cavani added: “On both sides there are good things, we leave with a positive feeling and we try to play football, then it was already a classic, we live it like this.”
