Zimbabwe: Health Minister Fired over Corrupt Charge
Dr Obadiah Moyo, Zimbabwe’s minister of Health, has been fired in connection with a corrupt multi-million dollar deal to procure coronavirus (COVID-19) test kits and medical equipment.
In a statement released on Tuesday evening, 7 July, Misheck Sibanda – the chief secretary to the president and cabinet – announced that Dr Moyo had been removed from his position by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
According to Sibanda, the politician was sacked due to “conduct inappropriate for a Government Minister [sic].”
Per reports, Dr Moyo was arrested last month for allegedly issuing $60 million in tenders to supply COVID-19 test kits and equipment to obscure companies – specifically NatPharm and Drax International LLC – that are linked to the political elite.
He was released on $50 000 bail, and is currently awaiting the start of his criminal trial.
If found guilty, Dr Moyo could face up to 15 years in jail.
