UN Warns of Regional War Risk in Eastern Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is grappling with escalating violence as the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels intensify their advance towards Goma, a city of two million and a regional humanitarian hub.

In recent weeks, M23 capture towns such as Sake and Masisi, further encircling Goma and displacing over 400 000 people this year alone. The United Nations (UN) has warned that the conflict, which has already displaced millions over decades, risks sparking a regional war.

The death of Major General Peter Cirimwami, North Kivu’s military governor, underscores the severity of the crisis. While visiting troops on the front line in Kasengezi, near Goma, Cirimwami succumbed to injuries under unclear circumstances, the army announced on Friday, 24 January.

Meanwhile, Rwanda faces accusations from the DRC and UN of supporting M23, claims it denies while acknowledging troop deployments in the region for its security.

The United States, United Kingdom, and France have urged their nationals to evacuate Goma amid fears of further escalation. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with internally displaced persons facing dire conditions.

As the conflict deepens, the UN has relocated non-essential staff but remains committed to critical operations in Goma, including food distribution and medical aid.
