Toby Finneran – a British Ironman triathlete who is currently visiting Cape Town, Western Cape – has received a flood of support and praise for saving two drowning people while out on a walk.

Finneran was enjoying a stroll along the Sea Point Promenade in the Mother City on Sunday afternoon, 7 May, when he spotted a 12-year-old boy frantically grabbing a nearby lifebuoy, before running into the ocean.

When he realised the young boy would be unable to reach his friend who was drowning, Finneran entered the rough swell, swimming out to assist the struggling youth and brought him back to shore.

Once back on land, he administered first aid – guided by a doctor friend in England whom he had called for assistance – and waited for the paramedics to arrive.

While the paramedics were attending to the youngster, Finneran also noticed an older 18-year-old dreadlocked man nearby, who was unconscious and experiencing symptoms of hypothermia as well as possibly secondary drowning.

The paramedics on scene were able to help the older teenager – whom they assume had also been attempting to help rescue the young boy.

“I don’t feel like a hero… If someone is in trouble, then you should help,” the 31-year-old told an international publication on Wednesday, 10 May.
