Suarez’s Exit – Another Barcelona Transfer Saga

Luis Suarez will soon be leaving FC Barcelona for Atletico Madrid, following a falling out with newly appointed manager, Ronald Koeman. However, the move has been fraught with obstacles.

Per reports, on Monday, 21 September, the 33-year-old Uruguayan had come to an acrimonious agreement to end his contract, giving up part of his salary to become a free agent.

To complicate matters, the club’s 57-year-old coach expressly told the striker not to join one of Europe’s top teams, which included Real Madrid, PSG, Manchester City or Manchester United.

Juventus were the front-runners for his signature, but the delay in issuing him with an Italian passport before the transfer due date collapsed the move.

Atletico Madrid swooped in and agreed terms with the 33-year-old striker, however, Barca’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, blocked the move saying that the club cannot pay off Suarez’s contract to join a fellow title challenger.

As it stands, the ex-Liverpool forward may end up spending another season at Barcelona and his spot on the first team start is not guaranteed.
