Spurs Successfully Appeal Against Son’s Red Card

The Football Association (FA) has retracted a red card that was given to Tottenham Hotspur forward, Son Heung-min, for tackling Everton’s Andre Gomes in the midst of gameplay.

During the Spurs’ 1-1 draw against the Toffees last Sunday, 3 November, Gomes was tackled by the 27-year-old South Korean international from behind.

As a result, the 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder suffered a fracture dislocation to his right ankle. A visibly distraught Son was shown a red card by referee Martin Atkinson, and was subsequently dismissed from the pitch.

In a statement released on Tuesday, 5 November, FA revealed that Atkinson’s decision had been overturned.

They said: “[Son] will be available for Tottenham Hotspur FC’s next three domestic fixtures after an independent Regulatory Commission upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal.”

On the same day, Gomes – who underwent successful ankle surgery on Monday, 4 November – was discharged from the hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.
