Shepherd Bushiri, Wife in Police Custody
Shepherd Bushiri and his wife are currently in police custody in Lilongwe, Malawi.
A week ago, the self-proclaimed prophet and his wife, Mary – both of whom are facing charges of fraud, theft and money laundering – violated their bail conditions by fleeing from South Africa to their home country amid security fears.
In a statement released on Facebook this morning, Wednesday 18 November, Bushiri – who denies any wrongdoing – said that he would be handing himself over to the local police authorities “to legally explain and defend the decisions that I made to come to Malawi.”
However, reports from the southeastern country claim that the fugitive couple were taken into custody, after approximately 15 police officers raided their home earlier today.
Their detainment comes after the North Gauteng High Court issued warrants for their arrest yesterday, Tuesday 17 November.
Legal proceedings to secure the Bushiris’ extradition to South Africa have already been initiated.
Additionally, the formal withdrawal of bail – as well as the forfeiture of their R200 000-bail deposit – has been postponed to 7 December.
