Serie A Receives Official Restart Date

It’s official: Italy’s Serie A will restart on 20 June.

The league was suspended on 9 March by order of the Italian government amid the rapid spreading of the coronavirus pandemic.

Italy’s top flight competition was given the go ahead from sports minister, Vincenzo Spadafora, on Thursday, 28 May, after the government’s Technical and Scientific Committee had come to an agreement with football bosses regarding health protocols.

Spadafora announced: “Italy has started to return to normal life again, it is only right that football should do the same … the championship can resume on June 20.”

He added: “There’s then the possibility that the Italian Cup semi-finals and final can be played on 13 and 17 June.”

Serie A still has 12 rounds of matches to play, including four games that must be played from the previous round.

Juventus is currently top of the log with 63 points from 26 games, while Lazio looms threateningly in second place with 62 points; Inter Milan sits in third place with 55 points, and have one game left to play.
