Rwanda and DR Congo to Sign Landmark Peace Deal

Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are set to formally sign a peace agreement next Friday, 27 June, following years of unrest in eastern DRC.

The deal – brokered by the United States (US) and Qatar – marks a renewed attempt to end hostilities involving the M23 rebel group, which had seized control of key cities, including Goma and Bukavu, earlier this year.

The agreement – which will be signed in Washington, D.C. – outlines mutual respect for territorial integrity and includes commitments to disarmament, ceasefire and the reintegration of non-state-armed groups. It also addresses the return of displaced civilians and refugees.

US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, is expected to attend the signing, which builds on principles agreed upon by both nations in April. The US views the deal as a path to long-term stability and increased investment in the mineral-rich region.

However, scepticism remains due to repeated ceasefire failures and ongoing tensions over Rwanda’s alleged support for the M23 rebels. Rwandan authorities have denied all related accusations.

The success of the negotiations now depends on its implementation and the cooperation from armed factions on the ground. If upheld, it could mark a turning point in resolving one of central Africa’s most enduring conflicts.
