The English Premier League’s (EPL) recent crackdown on the Financial Fair Play regulations has left many teams tightening their purse strings to avoid any future repercussions.

As the January transfer window closed on Thursday, 1 February – with no last-minute signings or departures – it became clear that this would be the lowest January spend in a non-Covid season since 2011-12.

According to reports, the top 20 EPL clubs spent a total of £96.2 million this window, an astonishing £715 million less than in the same window last year.

As Everton and Nottingham Forest are currently in the firing line for allegedly breaching the EPL’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, it seems their comrades are eager to keep their noses clean.

However, experts believe that the mid-year spending window will spell a major comeback.

“I think what we are storing up is a spending circus in the summer because there has been so much pressure on these clubs,” Professor Rob Wilson told an international publication today, Friday 2 February.

“You’d imagine that the spending will be much heavier in the summer – I just don’t necessarily think it will reach those multi-billion pound levels we have seen in years gone by,” he added.
