Napoli Advances Whilst Ancelotti Gets the Boot

Napoli made it through to the UEFA Champions League knockout stage after they ran riot with a 4-0 win over Genk on Tuesday evening, 10 December 2019. The victory was bittersweet however for Carlo Ancelotti as he was sacked shortly after the final whistle blew.

Before the match started, the 60-year-old Italian manager shared foreboding sentiments about his future with the Premier League club, mentioning that he wanted to meet with club chairman Aurelio de Laurentiis.

Ancelotti said: “I’ve never resigned and I don’t think I will, tomorrow I will meet with de Laurentiis to take a decision.”

A hat-trick from Arkadiusz Milik sunk the Belgian team, breaking a nine-match losing streak and earning Napoli a qualification spot, but this was not enough for management.

Ancelotti’s feelings of uneasiness were soon justified when the official Napoli club twitter account tweeted his sacking after the team won.

The statement read: “Napoli has decided to revoke the role of technical manager of the first team from Mr Carlo Ancelotti.”

There is a silver lining for the legendary former midfielder though: several big teams have whispered interest in picking him up.
