Marega Leaves Pitch in Protest of Racial Abuse

Porto forward, Moussa Marega, endured racial insults last night, Sunday, 17 February, during his team’s 2-1 win over Vitoria SC.

The 28-year-old Malian scored what would be the winning goal at the 60th minute, then celebrated by drawing attention to his skin, taunting the section of the home crowd that had been hurling abuse at him during the game.

However, the match referee did not agree with this flourish and awarded Marega a yellow card; the former Vitoria player then made his way off the pitch – despite his team-mates trying to change his mind – whilst signalling a “thumbs down” to the crowd.

Porto coach, Sergio Conceicao, also tried to calm Marega down, but eventually had to substitute him at the 72nd minute.

Later on, he posted a photo on Instagram of himself making rude hand gestures towards the crowd. In the caption, he wrote: “To those idiots that go to the stadium to shout racist insults, go [expletive] yourselves. I’m also grateful to the referee for not defending me and giving me a yellow card for defending my skin colour … You’re a disgrace!”
