Maradona Undergoes Brain Surgery to Remove Blood Clot

Diego Maradona was admitted to hospital on Monday, 2 November, for a series of medical check-ups, after feeling unwell for several days – and tests revealed that the legend needed to undergo surgery after a blood clot was discovered on his brain.

His personal neurosurgeon, Leopoldo Luque, confirmed that the surgery to remove the blood clot from his brain was successful and that the football icon is recovering well.

He said: “This chronic subdural hematoma was successfully evacuated. Diego tolerated the surgery very well. He is awake. Everything is fine.”

A subdural hematoma is considered to be one of the deadliest of all head injuries but Luque is certain there was “no neurological damage,” and Maradona is already cracking jokes.

Football fans and players across the globe took to social media to wish the 1986 World Cup winner speedy recovery.

Lionel Messi posted a message on Instagram and said: “Diego, all the strength in the world to you. My family and I hope to see you well as soon as possible. A heartfelt hug.”

Zinedine Zidane also took a moment to wish the Argentine football legend well during a media interview, following Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Inter Milan on Wednesday, 04 November.

Maradona’s lawyer, Matias Morla, confirmed that his client is in an “excellent” condition, and he further urged people to remain positive.

He said: “Let’s stay strong and we’ll get through this.”
