Malawi Faces Pivotal Election Amid Economic Turmoil

Malawians head to the polls on 16 September in a high-stakes election shaped by economic hardship, concerns about corruption, and lingering distrust in state institutions.

Seventeen candidates are contesting the presidency, but the spotlight is on incumbent Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party and his long-time rival, Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party. Other presidential hopefuls include former head of state Joyce Banda and veteran politician Atupele Muluzi, along with new contenders such as Dalitso Kabambe and Vice-President Michael Usi.

Chronic fuel shortages, food insecurity, and soaring inflation overshadow the campaign. At petrol stations, frustration is palpable.

“My business is not doing well because of the scarcity of fuel,” taxi driver Nelson Mazola recently told an international publication, echoing the struggles of many Malawians.

Questions over the credibility of the Malawi Electoral Commission persist, with violent clashes during protests deepening fears of intimidation and whispers of manipulation. Civil society groups have urged political parties to rein in youth militias accused of pre-poll violence.

With memories of the annulled 2019 election still fresh, this vote is seen as a critical test of Malawi’s democratic resilience. Results are expected by the end of September.
