Lizzo Sued Over Alleged Copyright Infringement

Lizzo is facing a copyright lawsuit from the Georgia-based Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) Trust, which claims she sampled the 1970s soul track, “Win or Lose (We Tried)”, without permission in an unreleased song which recently went viral online.

The dispute centres on a short Instagram clip shared in August, where Lizzo performed a snippet of a track believed to be titled “I’m Goin’ In Till October”.

The video – which showed her washing a red Porsche while rapping, “I got good jeans like I’m Sydney” – referenced actress Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle “Great Jeans” campaign, sparking debate across social media.

The GRC Trust, which holds the publishing rights to the original song, alleges Lizzo and her label, Atlantic Records, profited from the use of the sample and are seeking damages and an injunction.

In response, the 37-year-old pop star’s representatives said: “We are surprised that the GRC Trust filed this lawsuit. To be clear, the song has never been commercially released or monetised.”

A hearing is scheduled for 19 November in California, underscoring growing legal scrutiny over artists’ use of samples, even in short, unreleased online snippets.
