La Liga Set to Return on June 12

La Liga president, Javier Tebas, has announced that the 2019-20 season will resume on June 12, with games being played every day in order to finish the season on the pitch.

The Spanish League season was brought to a standstill by the Coronavirus pandemic in March. However, since the lockdown restrictions have been eased and most teams have returned to training, the season will kick off next month.

Although Tebas has not yet tabled the logistics plan for the proposed kick-off date, he remains certain that the safety of the players and health compliance are of most importance.
He said: “I’d like to restart on June 12 but we have to be prudent and it’s not just up to football, it’s also up to society, we all need to focus on complying with measures to protect health”.

He further indicated that all the games will definitely be played behind closed doors. But, the league is yet to figure out innovative ideas to broadcast the games and create an atmosphere for the matches.

It was announced on Sunday that five players from Spain’s top two divisions tested positive for COVID-19. Tebas confirmed that three more staff members’ results came back positive.
Although he expects more positive results, he is delighted that from 2500 tests conducted, only 8 came back positive, far lower than expected. He says that this is a great sign that there would be no increase to the risk of players getting infected once matches re-started.
