Jay-Z Denies Getting Political at Super Bowl
Jay-Z and Beyonce did not protest by remaining seated during the national anthem at the Super Bowl over the weekend – they were in “artist mode”.
The 50-year-old rapper – along with his wife and their eight-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter – caught the attention of the media when they did not stand during Demi Lovato’s recital of the national anthem, sparking rumours that they were making a political statement.
In 2016, former American football player, Colin Kaepernick, famously knelt during “The Star-Spangled Banner” to protest racial inequality in the US. Beyonce and Jay-Z have both spoken in support of Kaepernick in previous years.
The “99 Problems” hitmaker set the record straight in an interview afterwards: “What happened was, we got there, we were sitting, and now the show’s about to start … we immediately jump into artist mode … now I’m really just looking at the show … if you don’t feel the music, you can’t really reach that level.”
He added that he was also more concerned with the sound levels and what the television cameras were filming.
