Nihon Hidankyo, an organisation representing survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, was awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize today, Friday 11 October, for its tireless efforts to promote nuclear disarmament.

The group, known as hibakusha, has spent decades raising awareness of the catastrophic effects of nuclear warfare by sharing personal testimonies and advocating for a world free from such weapons.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised the survivors for transforming their harrowing experiences into a powerful global movement.

Committee Chairman Jorgen Watne Frydnes stated that they wanted “to honour all survivors who, despite physical suffering and painful memories, have chosen to use their costly experience to cultivate hope and engagement for peace”.

Toshiyuki Mimaki, co-chair of Nihon Hidankyo, expressed deep emotion upon receiving the news, emphasising that the award would bolster their cause. “Nuclear weapons should absolutely be abolished,” the 81-year-old reaffirmed.

As the 80th anniversary of the bombings approaches in August 2025, this accolade brings renewed focus to the survivors’ message.
