Inside Mourinho & Lampard’s Heated Touchline Row

Jose Mourinho and Frank Lampard were involved in a touchline argument that nearly got out of hand as Tottenham booked its place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a 5-4 penalty shootout win against Chelsea on Tuesday, 29 September 2020.

The Portuguese boss is often the centre of touchline controversies, and he found himself in the limelight again.

The Blues’ Timo Werner fired the opening goal in the 19th minute of the game and shortly after, tensions sparked on the touchline.

Sam Wallace, a sports journalist who was sitting close to the touchline took to Twitter to disclose the conversation.

He wrote: “Lampard & Mourinho really sniping at one another across the tech areas.”

He also revealed that Mourinho allegedly said to Lampard: “F*****g hell, Frank, when you’re losing 3-0 you’re not standing up here”.

Wallace claims that the Spurs manager was referring to Chelsea being dominated 3-0 by West Brom on Saturday, 26 September.

However, Mourinho claims that he was giving his former player some insights on touchline ethics.

He said: “The only thing I was telling him [Lampard], just an opinion of an old coach to a young talented coach, which was when the players need us, it is when they are losing.”

He added: “When they [players] are winning we don’t need to be the protagonists of the touchline, we need to be there when they are losing.”
