South Africa is currently grappling with severe weather conditions across several regions, with the Western Cape, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal bearing the brunt.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple warnings as cold fronts, strong winds, and heavy rains impact the country. The Western Cape has been particularly affected, with ongoing torrential downpours and powerful winds expected to last until Friday, 12 July.

These conditions have caused significant destruction in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, where nearly 1 000 structures have been damaged, leaving approximately 4 000 residents homeless. Humanitarian aid, including hot meals and blankets, is being provided to those affected.

SAWS has also forecast large waves and storm surges along South Africa’s west and southeast coasts due to a mid-latitude cyclone. Waves are predicted to reach up to ten metres high, exacerbating the risk of coastal flooding and infrastructure damage.

In Gauteng, residents are experiencing icy temperatures, leading to an increased risk of fire-related incidents as people use heating devices to keep warm. Emergency services are on high alert, particularly in vulnerable communities.

KwaZulu-Natal is facing severe wind warnings, with gusts exceeding 80 kilometres per hour. These conditions, combined with high temperatures, have raised the risk of wildfires, prompting residents to take necessary precautions.
