Gordy the Seal Slides into the Cape Town Spotlight

Cape Town has a new star: a two-ton elephant seal affectionately dubbed “Gordy”, who captured hearts after venturing far from his aquatic home.
First spotted wandering the streets of Gordon’s Bay on Tuesday, 27 May, Gordy’s unexpected stroll through the small seaside town sparked both concern and delight, prompting locals, police and animal welfare groups to step in.
Marine specialists were able to successfully guide him back to the sea, but Gordy wasn’t done making waves.
Just two days later – and 35 kilometres across the bay – he reappeared at Simon’s Town Naval Base, this time choosing a quiet spot for a well-earned rest. Experts assured the public that large aquatic mammals’ behaviour was normal for their species, especially during moulting or post-swim recovery periods.
Meanwhile, some mistook him for Rocky, a southern elephant seal rescued in KwaZulu-Natal last year. However, authorities confirmed that Rocky is currently 1 200 kilometres south of Cape Town, as he is tracked by satellite.
Gordy’s appearances not only brought smiles but also inspired a viral social media moment: a playful meme by security firm Fidelity/ADT captured South Africa’s light-hearted spirit.
As Cape Town keeps a watchful eye, Gordy’s story serves as a joyful reminder of the unexpected ways wildlife can bring communities together.
