Godfrey Gao Collapses, Dies Aged 35
Taiwanese-Canadian actor, Godfrey Gao, has died aged 35, after he collapsed on the set of a Chinese sports-reality show early on Wednesday morning, 27 November.
Gao was filming the ninth episode of “Chase Me” – in which celebrities are pitted against regular contestants in a variety of physical challenges – when he collapsed at 2AM local time.
In a statement released by his management agency, JetStar Entertainment, Gao was treated by the show’s medical staff before he was rushed to a local hospital.
Three hours later, Gao was pronounced dead, with cardiac arrest cited as the cause of death.
The statement added: “Please respect [Gao’s] family in this time of sorrow and refrain from disturbing them. We will accompany [Gao’s] family to handle discreet funeral arrangements.”
Social media users have since slammed “Chase Me” for its allegedly dangerous set-up and appalling working conditions, saying these took a strong, physical toll on both the celebrity guests and the contestants.
Born in Taiwan and raised in Canada, Gao shot to stardom as a fashion model for Louis Vuitton. To international audiences, he was also known for his role as Magnus Bane from the 2013 film, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.”
