Football Bosses Urge the Government to Reopen Stadiums

Premier League Chief Executive Officer, Richard Masters, and members of other football governing bodies have signed a petition pleading with the government to reopen stadium gates for spectators.

Supporters have not been permitted into stadiums since football was suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government had plans to partially re-open stadiums on a socially-distanced basis from Thursday, 1 October, 2020.

Due to a spike in COVID-19 cases in the UK, those plans have been postponed for up to six months, in an effort to prevent the second wave of the virus.

Masters wrote an open letter calling on the government to reassess their decision to delay the reopening of sports arenas.

The FA Chief Executive Officer, Mark Bullingham, FA Director of Women’s Football, Kelly Simmons and EFL Chief Executive Officer, David Baldwin have all endorsed the letter.

A petition urging the government to allow fans back to the stadiums had over 135,000 signatures as of Wednesday, 07 October – which could force the government to take the decision to a parliamentary debate.
