First Lion Cubs in Decades Spotted at Babanango Game Reserve

Babanango Game Reserve in Zululand is celebrating a historic event with the birth of lion cubs, marking the first known births in the area in over 150 years.

Ecologist Stuart Dunlop announced the arrival of three lion cubs via the game reserve’s Facebook page on Tuesday, 9 July. The lioness, introduced just last year, exhibited signs of pregnancy in April and has been closely monitored.

The cubs were first sighted in June by dedicated wildlife monitors, and shortly thereafter, Jackie and Trey Slinkard from America were the first park guests to see them.

This milestone not only signifies a major success for the reserve’s conservation efforts, but also highlights the return of lions to a region where they had been absent for over a century and a half.

In addition to the lion offspring, the reserve also welcomed a white rhino calf several weeks ago and it has already formed a strong bond with its mother. Several other female rhinos at the reserve are showing signs of pregnancy, indicating promising prospects for the ongoing conservation initiatives.
