FA Suspended Dele Alli for COVID-19 Joke

The Football Association (FA) has issued Tottenham Hotspur star player, Dele Alli, with a one-match ban for posting a video online, mocking an Asian man and claiming that the man had COVID-19.

In February 2020, the 24-year-old midfielder captured himself wearing a face mask and suddenly turned the camera to an Asian man, then to a bottle of hand sanitiser, saying “The virus gunna have to be faster than that to catch me”.

Although Alli deleted the post and offered a public apology, the English international had already landed himself in hot water and was investigated by the FA.

On Thursday, 11 June 2020, FA slapped him with a one-match suspension, which means he will miss Spurs’ first return game against Manchester United.

Alli has also been issued with a £50,000 fine and instructed to undergo a face-to-face educational course for breaking FA Rule E3 – bringing the game into disrepute by including a reference to race and/or ethnic origin.

The England midfielder seems to have accepted the judgment, and has issued another apology in a statement published on Tottenham Hotspur’s website and on his Twitter account.

He said: “In response to the FA decision, I would like to apologise again for any offence caused by my behaviour. It was an extremely poorly judged joke about a virus that has now affected us more than we could ever have imagined.”
