FA Charges Ex-Referee Coote Over Klopp Video Comments

Former English Premier League (EPL) referee David Coote has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for making offensive comments about Jurgen Klopp in a leaked video.
The footage, believed to have been filmed in 2020 and shared widely online in late 2024, showed the 42-year-old sports official using abusive language towards the then-Liverpool manager, including disparaging remarks about his nationality.
The FA has classified the incident as an aggravated breach under Rule E3, citing the discriminatory nature of the language.
Coote was suspended and later dismissed by the Professional Game Match Officials Board in December following a series of misconduct revelations, including a separate video appearing to show him using narcotics.
Allegations of gambling misconduct were also investigated, relating to a 2019 Championship match, but no charges were brought. The referee has denied any wrongdoing in that matter.
In January, Coote came out as gay, stating that the pressure of concealing his identity contributed to poor decision-making and behaviour. He is currently serving a UEFA suspension until mid-2026.
The FA has not confirmed when Coote must respond to the charge. If he admits guilt or is found responsible, a financial penalty is expected, with potential further consequences for non-compliance.
An independent panel will determine the outcome.
