FA Chairman Resigns After Remark About Black Players

FA chairman, Greg Clarke, has been forced to step down after making a series of offensive statements about race and sexuality while giving evidence to UK members of parliament on Tuesday, 10 November 2020.

Per reports, Clarke’s description of black players as “coloured footballers” caused outrage in the football world and damage to his association’s reputation.

The 63-year-old, who is also a vice-president of FIFA has issued a public apology, in which he said: “I am deeply saddened that I have offended those diverse communities in football that I and others worked so hard to include.”

The FA board held an emergency meeting and released a statement confirming that Clarke has resigned from his role as the chairperson.

The association has selected Peter McCormick as interim chairman until a new chairman is appointed in due course.

Responding to Clarke’s resignation statement, a Conservative member of parliament, Julian Knight, questioned the FA’s commitment to diversity.

He said: “It’s right that Greg Clarke apologised before the committee, however, this isn’t the first time that the FA has come to grief over these issues.”
