EPL Teams Show Support for “Black Lives” Matter Movement

Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle players have all shown support for the “Black Lives Matter” movement by taking a knee on Monday, 1 June.

The display of solidarity follows the death of African American man, George Floyd, after he was allegedly asphyxiated by a police officer on 25 May.

Many football clubs, including those from the Bundesliga, have posted images to social media showing players kneeling – mirroring Colin Kaepernick’s 2016 protest against police brutality – with the caption: “Unity is Strength. #BlackLivesMatter.”

Liverpool players, including James Milner, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson took to Twitter to share images of the team doing the aforementioned around the pitch center, with the caption.

Footballers, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho both called for “justice” for Floyd’s death; their speaking up led to the Chelsea and Newcastle squads mirroring the Reds on Tuesday, 2 June.

The Football Association recently announced in a statement: “The power of football can break down barriers across communities, and we remain deeply committed to removing all forms of discrimination from across the game we all love.”
