DJ Black Coffee Earns Production Credits on Drake’s Latest LP

Grammy Award-winning South African artist, DJ Black Coffee, has been credited as a producer on three of the songs from Drake’s latest album, “Honestly, Nevermind”, which was unexpectedly released today, Friday 17 June.

Black Coffee – real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo – is credited on the tracks “Currents”, “Overdrive”, and “Texts Go Green”, the latter which his son Esona Tyolo co-produced. The result is a distinctive African flavour being included in the album.

The LP also includes South African Music Award-winner Tresor, who co-wrote several songs on the album and provided vocals for “Currents”, “Down Hill”, and “Flight’s Booked”.

“Honestly, Nevermind” is Drake’s seventh solo studio LP and also contains production by Gordo, Tay Keith, and the well-known Noah “40” Shebib, amongst others.

Earlier this year, Black Coffee won his first-ever Grammy Award for his 2021 LP, “Subconsciously”. The win marked the first time a South African producer had ever won or even been nominated in their Best Dance/Electronic Album category.

While the newly-released album from Drake is definitely receiving attention, the concept behind the LP is a little less clear.

In the album description on Apple Music, the Canadian rapper wrote: “I let my humbleness turn to numbness at times letting time go by knowing I got the endurance to catch it another time. I work with every breath in my body ‘cause it’s the work, not air, that makes me feel alive.”
