Deadly Stadium Stampede Mars AFCON Game

Six people have died and over 40 others were injured in a stadium stampede ahead of the AFCON last-16 knockout match between Cameroon and Comoros on Monday night, 24 January.

The tragedy took place outside the Olembe Stadium in the Cameroon capital of Yaounde. Here, fans were trampled by others who attempted to enter the stadium by storming the gates, which had reportedly been closed by the stewards.

Hosting nation Cameroon went on to win the game 2-1, allowing them to progress to the quarter-final.

According to soccer officials, around 50 000 people had tried to attend the match – a little over the 80% spectator capacity allowed by coronavirus safety protocols.

The injured were treated at the stadium’s medical centre before being transported to Messassi Hospital, where they were visited by Confederation of African Football (CAF) general secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba.

“CAF is currently investigating the situation and trying to get more details on what transpired,” the football governing association declared in a statement. “We are in constant communication with the Cameroon government and the Local Organising Committee.”
