Community Rallies After TEARS Animal Rescue Fire

TEARS Animal Rescue in Cape Town, Western Cape, has been left reeling after a fire tore through part of its shelter in the early hours of Thursday morning, 18 September.
The blaze – which started on a neighbouring property around 5AM – spread across a wooden fence into the kennels, destroying several Wendy houses and causing significant damage.
Thankfully, no animals or staff were harmed. Many dogs are being treated for smoke inhalation, but remain safe in temporary areas.
Operations Manager Mandy Store credited local emergency services with preventing greater devastation: “We are so grateful for their rapid action that prevented further damage. Without their bravery and quick actions, it could have been much worse.”
Store confirmed plans to install stronger vibracrete walling to reduce future risks. “It is only with your help that we are able to assist desperate animals in need,” she added.
TEARS, which relies entirely on external support, has appealed to the public for donations to help replace kennels, dog beds, and fencing. Teams have begun clearing rubble as rebuilding efforts get underway.
