Biden Bows Out: Kamala Harris to Lead Democrats?

In a surprising turn of events, US President Joe Biden has announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

In a statement on Sunday, the 81-year-old President expressed that stepping down was in the best interest of the party and the nation. Biden, who plans to serve until January 2025, highlighted significant achievements during his term, including economic growth, healthcare expansion, and historic climate legislation.
Harris, 59, welcomed the endorsement, committing to unite the country against Republican candidate Donald Trump, who has recently surged ahead in the polls. While she has garnered endorsements from prominent Democrats such as Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, her official nomination will be confirmed at the Democratic National Convention in August.
Biden’s decision followed intense scrutiny and a poor debate performance against Trump, raising concerns about his fitness for office. Trump’s criticism of Biden’s ability to effectively lead for another 4 years was swift, with senior Republicans calling for Biden’s immediate resignation from the electoral race.

Meanwhile, Democrats are rallying behind Harris, with figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom and former contender Pete Buttigieg offering their support. The Democratic National Committee has already adjusted its fundraising efforts to back Harris’s campaign, signalling strong party unity ahead of the election.
