Barcelona Draw Overshadows Lionel Messi Milestone

Barcelona swallowed a double dose of humility last night, Tuesday 30 June, by not only crawling to a draw with Real Madrid, but also saw a Lionel Messi milestone getting largely drowned out.

The Catalans put up a brave front, but a late game penalty goal from the Whites’ Saul Niguez sealed a 2-2 draw at Camp Nou, denying the home team both precious points and a top spot on the La Liga table.

Argentine Messi contributed a goal at the 50th minute, thus reaching a personal record: netting 700 goals for club and country.

However, the 33-year-old forward’s team needed the win to move from second place with 69 points to topple Real Madrid’s 70. The draw greatly dulled the celebration of his footballing achievement.

After the match, Barca coach, Quique Setien, commented on the draw: “It’s a real shame, and the league title is looking much harder for us with each game.”

Setien’s squad has five games remaining, and have the potential to clear the top of the log if they beat Getafe at home on Thursday, 2 July.
