Arrested Mother Who Recorded Son’s Assault Denied Bail

A woman has been denied bail by a Swakopmund magistrate, after she recorded herself allegedly abusing her 18-month-old-baby.

The woman – 28-year-old Ruth Noabes – is accused of beating her infant son and video-recording the assault.

According to Erongo crime investigations coordinator, Erastus Iikuyu, Noabes is seen in the video slapping her son’s face several times and trying to suffocate him.

The assault occurred last week Tuesday, 6 August, at the Omdel township in Henties Bay. The boy has since been moved to a place of safety at Walvis Bay.

Iikuyu explained: “[Noabes] did this while taking a video and sent the video to the boy’s father, after the boy’s father had allegedly terminated their relationship.”

Appearing at Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Monday 12 August, magistrate Conchita Olivier denied Noabes bail, before ordering her to remain in custody as investigations continue.

The case has been postponed to 24 September.
