Ajax Terminate Abdelhak Nouri’s Contract

AFC Ajax have cancelled the contract of player Abdelhak Nouri, just days after he had awoken from a nearly three-year coma in an undisclosed hospital.

The now 22-year-old midfielder collapsed from a heart attack during a pre-season friendly game against German outfit, Werder Bremen, on 8 July 2017. Although he received medical attention on the pitch and was transported to a nearby hospital, he suffered irrecoverable brain damage.

The Dutch club were then involved in a lengthy battle with Nouri’s family regarding the “inadequate” on-field assistance he received which led to his condition.

Now, a local publication reports that Ajax are formally cancelling the Amsterdam-born player’s contract, which was expected to be renewed in July. He will, however, continue to receive his salary until the first day of that month.

Club management are in talks with Nouri’s family regarding an alternative financial solution for the footballer, whilst he recovers at home.

Nouri made his professional debut on 13 March 2015, when youth division, Jong Ajax, played against VVV Venlo.
