AI Emerges as Key Ally in Global Fight Against Emissions

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is proving to be a powerful force in the global push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A recent study led by British economist Lord Nicholas Stern estimates AI could help cut up to 5.4 gigatonnes of CO? equivalent annually by 2035, largely through efficiency gains in power, food, and transport sectors.

From optimising wind energy forecasting to reducing food and packaging waste, AI is enhancing both industrial operations and everyday choices. Google’s DeepMind has improved wind energy value by 20%, while Amazon has saved millions of tonnes of packaging using AI.

Smart systems like Google Nest and Oracle Opower are nudging households towards lower energy use, while tools such as Google Maps now suggest fuel-efficient routes to reduce car emissions.

AI is also aiding governments with climate policy analysis and delivering more accurate early warning systems for floods and other climate risks.

However, experts caution that without public oversight, the rapid growth of AI could widen global inequalities and increase energy demand. Thus, the study urges governments to steer AI development towards climate-positive outcomes and ensure benefits are shared globally.

Kate Brandt, Google’s Chief Sustainability Officer, said: “AI can play a powerful role in supporting climate action while boosting sustainable and inclusive economic growth.”
