31 Dead, 100 Injured in Iraqi Shrine Stampede

A mass stampede at a shrine in central Iraq on Tuesday, 10 September, has left 31 worshippers dead and at least 100 others injured.

The tragedy took place at the Imam Hussein Shrine in the city of Karbala. Here, tens of thousands of Shia Muslim pilgrims gather to celebrate the religious holiday of Yom Ashura.

The holiday commemorates the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad, who died at the Battle of Karbala in the year 680.

According to officials, the stampede occurred during the “Tweireej run”, in which worshippers rush towards the shrine around noon. In the midst of the run, however, part of a walkway near the shrine collapsed.

As a result, mass panic broke out among the worshippers, triggering the stampede.

Of those injured, at least 10 are in critical condition. Per the Iraqi Health Ministry’s findings, the death toll is expected to rise.
