2025 Nobel Prizes Honour Peace, Literature and Legacy

The 2025 Nobel Prizes were announced on Friday, 10 October, honouring individuals whose work reflects political courage, literary brilliance and the ongoing pursuit of peace across the globe.

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado received the Nobel Peace Prize for her steadfast democratic fight against incumbent Nicolas Maduro’s authoritarian regime. The Nobel Foundation hailed her as “one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America.”

Speaking from hiding, Machado was humbled by the accolade: “I have no words … I am just one person, I certainly don’t deserve this.”

In literature, Hungarian novelist Laszlo Krasznahorkai was honoured “for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art.”

Known for “Satantango” and “The Melancholy of Resistance”, Krasznahorkai is Hungary’s second Nobel laureate, after Imre Kertesz won in 2002.

The Nobel Peace Prize also drew attention to global politics, with Donald Trump among this year’s prominent nominees for his Gaza ceasefire efforts, alongside Sudan’s volunteer network Emergency Response Rooms.

Together, the 2025 laureates embody the spirit of Alfred Nobel’s will: celebrating art’s endurance, democratic resolve, and humanity’s fragile hope amid turmoil.
